Fiberglass vs Gunite Pools
Choose fiberglass for a faster, lower-maintenance pool in a standard shape; choose gunite for custom shapes, spas, vanishing edges and difficult hillside sites. Fiberglass runs $55,000–$100,000+ and concrete $65,000–$120,000+ in Angi's San Francisco data.
Side by side
| Fiberglass | Gunite | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost (Angi SF) | $55,000–$100,000+ | $65,000–$120,000+ |
| Build time on site | Shorter: shell set in days once the hole is dug | Longer: steel, gunite, cure, tile, plaster |
| Customization | Manufacturer models only | Any shape, depth, bench, shelf, spa |
| Size limits | Width limited by road transport | Set by the lot, setbacks and engineering |
| Spa | Matching spa shells or separate spa | Attached raised spa with spillover |
| Vanishing edge | Rarely practical | Yes, with a catch basin |
| Surface and maintenance | Smooth gelcoat, no replastering | Plaster, quartz or pebble; periodic resurfacing |
| Steep or irregular lots | Needs a level engineered pad | Best fit; can be pier-supported |
| Delivery access | Truck route or crane over the house | Hoses and smaller rigs reach farther back |

When fiberglass makes sense
- A standard rectangle or freeform shape works for you
- The yard is flat or gently sloped with crane or truck access
- You want less time with an open hole in the yard
- You don't want to plan for replastering
When gunite makes sense
- You want a raised spa, sun shelf, bench seating or a specific depth
- The lot is steep, irregular or tight to setbacks
- You want a vanishing edge or a pool that fits an odd corner
- You want the finish, tile and coping to match the house

Comparison questions
Is fiberglass cheaper than gunite?
Usually at the start. Angi's San Francisco data shows fiberglass at $55,000–$100,000+ and concrete at $65,000–$120,000+. On hard sites (crane, walls, long haul-off) the gap narrows.
Which lasts longer?
Both can last decades with good installation. Gunite interiors need periodic resurfacing; fiberglass gelcoat does not need replastering but can be costly to repair if damaged.
